In Memoriam: Professor David Isaacs
It is with great sadness that WSPID shares the passing of Professor David Isaacs, who died on Saturday, August 2, 2025, in Sydney, Australia. Professor Isaacs was the first Chair of the ANZPID Network.
“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants, words famously attributed to Isaac Newton, would just as fittingly be attributed to Professor Isaacs by many pediatric infectious disease specialists across Oceania. Widely considered the father of pediatric infectious diseases as a specialty in both Australia and New Zealand, Professor Isaacs’ legacy in infectious diseases, equity, and advocacy for children is immeasurable.
The pediatric infectious disease community in Oceania, and indeed around the world, has lost a remarkable colleague, mentor, and friend. His impact on clinical care, policy, advocacy, and ethics has shaped generations of clinicians and researchers.
“Professor Isaacs shaped the careers of countless Australian pediatric infectious diseases specialists, including my own, through his leadership in establishing the field in Australia, willingness to invite the next generation into excellence in clinical care, and his wide-ranging interests. He led the way and demonstrated the WSPID values of collaboration, advocacy, knowledge, and equity. His contribution and wisdom will be missed. Vale David.”
